A Simple Method for Hydrophobic Modification of Poly (Ethylene Terephthalate) Plain Fabric
Abstract: The aim of this work is hydrophobic modification of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) plain fabric intended for water repellency property. A simple technique was used tomodify textile surface. Chemical modification of textile fabric was done with hydrophobic silanes at 120°C under vacuum condition. Silicone based silanes were chosen for this research. Surface wettability of unmodified and modified fabrics was studied withcontact angle measurement. A strong water penetration into unmodifiedfabric was found. On the other hand, modified textile fabric showed waterrepellency. Comparative to other silane, fluorine containing silane showed higher contact angle and lower tilt angle on modified textile fabric. Surface topography of resulted fabrics was investigated with a scanning electron microscope. Moreover, textilesurfaces modified with different silanes became rough. Finally, this paper reports a simple technique for obtaining hydrophobic textile fabric.
