Tertiary education traditionally is defined as the process of training at a university of other institution of higher learning; however, in a broader sense, tertiary education provides life-long learning opportunities to improve the lives of an eager audience. In the past, opportunities for tertiary education have been limited to those who could afford to attend classes at an institution where they worked towards a degree. Today, educational opportunities have expanded through distance education and technology that potentially allow a world-wide audience to gain knowledge and understanding of a field of interest. A number of challenges with web-based education remain and new challenges are evolving as online education expands.
