Simulation on Reliable Data Dissemination in Wireless Sensor Network for Rate-based Congestion Control

In wireless sensor networks (WSN), nodes have very limited energy resources, limited processing and memory capabilities. Congestion causes due to the unpredictable nature of traffic load variation, link capacity, fluctuation, topology modification or various types of misbehaviors. Packet losses and retransmissions resulting form congestion causes energy waste, throughput reduction and to the decrease of the overall network lifetime. This situation motivates the need for congestion control in wireless sensor network. In this paper a congestion control scheme is proposed. A rate-based congestion control mechanism is used to control the rate of the upstream node. For reliable transmission link layer acknowledgement has been considered in MAC layer design. Fair packet delivery has also been maintained by this scheme. The congestion control scheme has been implemented in ns2 simulator. The results show that the scheme performs better in congestion control and achieves good performance.
