A Multi-Analytical Study of China Brand 6063 Aluminium Profiles Employed in Artistic and Architectural Applications

Abstract: Application of extruded aluminium alloy 6063 also called Al-Mg-Si alloy in architectural and artistic spheres, especially in the fabrication of artefacts traditionally produced with wood or other materials, has gained appreciable momentum and acceptability in the twenty-first century Nigeria. In a standard aluminium alloy 6063, aluminium is the major metal while magnesium and silicon are principal alloying elements, which imbues the alloy with strength and corrosion resistance. In Nigeria, most of the extruded aluminium alloy 6063 profiles employed are imported from China and are generally referred to as ‘China’. Using the random sampling technique, this study examined the elemental composition of four China brand extruded aluminium alloy 6063 samples collected in Benin City using three Ion Beam Accelerator techniques of PIXE, PIGE and RBS simultaneously. Findings indicate that none of the China brand alloy 6063 studied met the global standard. The implication of this is that the imported China brand extruded aluminium profiles 6063 may not exhibit the peculiar characteristics of standard aluminium alloy 6063. The study provides a good database on the elemental composition of China brand aluminium profile samples. Such a database is of technical importance to the Nigerian Government and her product regulatory agencies in checking the influx of substandard aluminium profiles to Nigeria.
